Copenhagen, Denmark – Maersk is joining forces with Danone, a leading company in the global food and beverage sector, to reduce logistics-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions significantly. This collaboration will leverage Maersk’s ECO Delivery Ocean, a service that utilizes reduced-GHG emission fuels like bio-diesel and bio-methanol sourced exclusively from waste feedstocks. By integrating these sustainable fuels into its operations, Maersk enables Danone to achieve an impressive reduction of over 40% in GHG emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.
“We are excited to partner with Maersk through Danone’s Partner for Growth program. The ECO Delivery Ocean product aligns perfectly with our decarbonization strategy, which emphasizes alternative fuels and multimodal transportation,” said Jean-Yves Krummenacher, Global Chief Procurement Officer at Danone. “Utilizing Maersk’s innovative solutions represents another significant milestone in our commitment to reducing CO2 emissions in sea freight.”
Danone has set an ambitious goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning its sustainability pathway with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) since 2017. This commitment underscores the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship. Maersk is equally committed, targeting net-zero emissions by 2040 and being the first shipping and logistics firm to have an SBTi-approved pathway to achieve this goal.
“The swift reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is at the core of both our companies’ missions,” emphasized Emilio de la Cruz, Maersk Area Managing Director for South West Europe. “Well-established brands like Danone can serve as beacons within their industries by employing effective strategies to decarbonize their supply chains. We are proud to be Danone’s trusted partner in this vital initiative.”
The partnership between Danone and Maersk goes beyond ocean transport, offering comprehensive inland logistics solutions. This collaboration includes dedicated control towers that oversee operations, ensuring seamless logistics processes at all times. By integrating land and sea transportation solutions, Maersk and Danone are taking significant strides toward a more sustainable supply chain, ultimately contributing to the broader goal of reducing global emissions in the logistics sector.
